JSA Service hosted a drinks reception at The Hyatt Regency—The Churchill on Thursday, April 27 ^th , to mark its 50 ^th anniversary.

JSA Service executives, employees, esteemed clients, and partners attended the drinks reception, providing an occasion to contemplate previous accomplishments while anticipating the next 50 years.

In addition, there was a presentation showcasing JSA Service’s history, along with a staff awards ceremony and a raffle aimed at generating funds for The Veterans Charity, an organisation that JSA Service is partnered with.

Since JSA Service’s establishment in 1973, it has become a leading HVAC specialist, known for providing exceptional commercial and industrial energy, projects, and solutions. Their commitment to innovation and excellence has allowed the company to grow and thrive for half a century.

Joe Storey & Associates Ltd. (now trading as JSA Service) bought the Trane London franchise in 1973 and, in 1991, became an independent operation. In 1998, Allan Wilkinson started as an apprentice under the mentorship of his trade’s respected grandfather and JSA Service’s director, Len Canham.

After being headhunted by Trane in 2004 and transitioning into a technical support position, Allan was approached by JSA Service to serve as the Managing Director in 2009. Subsequently, he acquired the company in 2014, becoming the owner of the same organisation where he initially started as an apprentice.

HIGH END INSTALL COMPLETED BY JSA SERVICE

A recent client requested a high end install for the two new chillers he had delivered to a London hospital. The client wanted nothing than the best install possible and this is where JSA Service delivered the goods!

Primary Pump Install

The client requested the primary pumps were to be removed from the plant room and installed into the void of the chillers. In connecting the pumps to the main pipework, the client asked for the traditional rubber bellows not to be used and instead requested for stainless steel bellows to be installed. Issues with suppliers meant JSA Service were not able to supply these and so an innovative solution needed to be found. The solution to our problem was to have custom built braided metallic hoses designed and produced. These hoses connected to Tru-Bore stainless pipework and connected with a KITZ shut off valve, which gave the client not only the high end install they wanted but additionally, I think we can all agree, the wow factor they were looking for.

Secondary Pumps

In changing the layout of the plant room, part of the secondary pumps needed to be replaced. The transition from the original 10” pipework to 8” to meet the new pumps were achieved again using Tru-Bore stainless steel pipework to give another excellent finish.

8 Energy Saving HVAC Tips

With the UK energy crisis in full swing, building and facility managers must start making changes to improve energy efficiency on building HVAC systems to significantly reduce power bills. 1 - Maintenance : Regular maintenance is the best way to keep your system in great shape and identify small issues before they become big problems!

The finalists across 24 different categories have now been published, and JSA Service are pleased to announce that they have been shortlisted for the ' Diversity & Inclusion Award '.

The HVAC industry is embracing the need to encourage women and ethnic minorities and this new award seeks to recognise the progress being made on sites, offices and branches. The Diversity and Inclusion Award is open to individuals who have made a particular impact in their organisations and to companies who have introduced initiatives that help promote the role of women, or which encourage inclusion in other ways. As witnessed last year, ‘diversity’ can also include ‘neurodiversity’ (‘thinking differently’).

The H&V News Awards have been celebrating the achievements of the HVAC industry for almost 30 years. Each year, they look for the most forward-thinking, innovative and customer-focused businesses in the industry to enter.

JSA Service Brings A Smile Of Joy

In June 2022, JSA Service received an email from Laura*. A young single mum to three children who lived in a housing association maisonette in Sunbury-On-Thames (near to JSA Service’s head office!).

Two years ago, her eldest daughter was diagnosed by Great Ormond Street Hospital as having a rare condition called Aquagenic Urticaria - a severe and rare allergy to water. She had also been diagnosed with a condition called hyperhidrosis, which means excess sweating and therefore she is effectively allergic to her own sweat.

Her condition means that any contact with water or even her own sweat can cause hives and facial / throat swelling. The family has had to make lots of adjustments, from not being able to partake in sports to taking time off school if the weather gets too hot.

With money tight, black out curtains, fans and an air cooler not making any difference and a recent trip to A&E, Laura decided she had to do something for her daughter as it is imperative to keep her daughter cool, especially during the summer months.

After reaching out to JSA Service, our Managing Director, Allan Wilkinson took it upon himself to help Laura with a domestic air conditioning unit for her daughter’s bedroom so she could at least have a cool place to sleep and study for her GCSEs.

The A/C unit was installed free of charge on behalf of JSA Service as a gesture of goodwill and Laura commented:

“You’ve allowed my daughter to have a safe space and I know how much it will improve not only her physical, but also her mental health – especially during the warmer summer months.”

Health & Safety - JSA's Top Priority

Health and safety is always at the forefront of everyone’s mind whenever a new job starts here at JSA Service. A recent project undertaken for a new Air Handling Unit and Heat Recovery System that took place on a building by the Kent coast, brought some of its own challenges.

Issues began to arise as there was very little space to install the system required, undeterred, JSA Service made several site visits and carefully made detailed drawings of the layout, whilst working with suppliers to design a system that not only fits into the tight space allocated but also to ensure the client meets the Part L building regulations.

The Challenges

A few unique challenges that occurred included:

Restricted access to the roof via a cat ladder, with numerous heavy tools and equipment to get to the roof area.
A heavy footfall.
Co-ordinating other works being completed on-site.
Keeping a careful eye on the weather that can change in an instant.

The Solution

With health and safety coming first, JSA Service managed to secure the site and complete the works safely by:

Installing an access staircase to the roof area.
Securing the roof with hand rails.
Implementing a mechanical hoist to make easy work transferring the heavy equipment on and off the roof.
Working with the client to create exclusion zones around the premises to reduce the risk should anything fall from the roof.

Overall the great co-ordination with the clients health and safety team along with the experience our team here at JSA Service have, the project was managed safely, on time and to the clients expectations.

JSA Service wins 1st Runner Up in the Spelthorne Healthy Business Awards

JSA Service had a fantastic evening at the Spelthorne Borough Council Business Awards! We are proud to be awarded 1st Runner Up in the Healthy Business Award category, sponsored by Everyone Active, for the work we have done to improve the health and wellbeing of our staff over the past 18 months, focussing on the welfare of all our colleagues throughout the pandemic and beyond.

From the introduction of our healthcare cash back scheme, SimplyHealth, to the start of the Kickstart employee arrangement - JSA are dedicated to improving our employees’ health and wellbeing.

The black tie event saw a large crowd including several businesses throughout Spetlthorne and entertainment included the Sing Out Waitresses & Waiters who masqueraded as part of the venue staff before bursting into song with an interactive, fun-filled show to get everyone on their feet.

We look forward to attending the event again next year!

JSA SERVICE SHOW THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT TO THE VETERANS CHARITY

Leading commercial air conditioning firm, JSA Service, have continued their commitment to the Armed Forces Community by announcing their support for The Veterans Charity.

The Sunbury-on-Thames-based company, which has been delivering first class air conditioning and chiller services for more than 45 years, have committed to supporting the charity and will be raising funds and awareness with staff getting involved in a variety of initiatives.

JSA Service were a key sponsor of 'Run To Pegasus' which the charity hosted as part of the commemorations for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. JSA Service Director, Allan Wilkinson even took part in the event and ran 75 miles from Dorset to Normandy and raised in excess of £2000 for the charity.

Allan says “I’ve been raised by a family of military enthusiasts who have been in everything from the Merchant Navy, Royal Navy, Paras and Marines, and like most, have ancestry who fought and died fighting for our freedom.

That’s why JSA Service have continued to show support to The Veterans Charity, to help those battling hardship and distress. We are committed to the Armed Forces Community whether that be directly through The Veterans Charity or employing Veterans in the workplace.

I am very proud of those who are serving or have served for Queen and Country, so much we owe to so few.”

There is no denying it, the Earth’s temperature in rising. Climate change, caused by Carbon Dioxide and other human-made emissions is a major cause for concern – but all is not lost, we can all do our part to help save our planet. JSA Service prides itself in providing a first class service to all its customers and has recently received a 5 star rating from one of the leading and biggest FM companies for a recent HVACR installation.

"JSA recently undertook a project for me - this involved an installation of 2x 860kw Air Cooled Geoclima Chillers at a building within the docklands area right next to the DLR station. The work incorporated full validation, road closure, collaboration with DLR management team, cranage, lifting of both new chillers with attenuation packs to a very limited space, pipework modifications, manufacturer commissioning and 12 months maintenance thereafter on completion.

I was extremely impressed with regards to JSA’s overall approach to this installation and working timeframes. Their in house capability to complete all the validations etc was second to none and their due diligence throughout the process was excellent with onsite management and staff team always aware of works being undertaken or scheduled in. The work was completed seamlessly and signed off / commissioned by the manufacturer which gave us warranty certainty. JSA also provided a number of post project detailed documents which were all in line with our expectations.

Each and every member of JSA’s team involved in the project were professional, polite and delivered everything in line with our high expectations. JSA was an absolute pleasure to manage throughout this process, they already were providing a superb service and maintenance program to all CRAC units and chillers onsite anyway and showed their expertise. I would not have any hesitation in recommending JSA for future works!"

World Refrigeration Day is celebrating the national day of cooling this year by focusing on careers in the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pumps industry and is titled “Cooling Champions: Cool Careers for a Better World”. The goal of the campaign is to inspire students and young professionals – for both men and women – in all countries, encouraging them to meet the challenges faced in their communities.

Here at JSA Service we pride ourselves on our staff, and the success of the company is driven by the people we employee. In fact, one of our longest standing employees has been with the company throughout its lifetime, for almost half a century!! We speak to Ed Holford to get a quick glimpse of his career in the industry:

How long have you been in the industry?

I started in July 1972, so next year it will be 50 years!

What inspired you to start your career in the industry?

I had left school and didn’t even know there was any need for air conditioning in the UK. I applied for a job in the stores at the company that was to become JSA Service, and it all started there - opening boxes, looking and asking what the contents did and learning. My direct supervisor at the time told me “air conditioning gets in your blood” and my younger self thought “silly old duffer, as if” - and here I am all these years later!

What has been the most successful point of your career / memorable moment?

After so many years in the industry, it is hard to make a specific choice. For me, the profit hasn’t been the underlying factor, I enjoy solving clients and colleagues’ problems no matter what the financial value. The best project I have worked on? Every single one at JSA Service.

What challenges have you faced in your career?

Probably the biggest challenge was when, after our company, having been a franchise holder with a former major manufacturer, were forced to go it ‘alone’ when they bought back all the franchises; their offer to take over JSA Service was derisible and consequently we became an independent company and had to learn to diversify sources of supply and support.

We started to build what have become strong relationships with three other manufacturers and were sub-contracted out to carry out refrigerant conversions by another manufacturer on their Centrifugal range. Becoming an independent company made us stronger and has further developed the company reputation for being able to work on a large range of manufacturers products and source spares, a lot of work went into doing so.

Overall, the best thing is that the challenges were often shared so that solutions could be found, and I was fortunate in having support from some of the finest in the industry when having to overcome problems, so teamwork has been the key to keeping clients happy.

How do you see the industry progressing in the future?

I think it will be much the same as the industry has seen in recent years; innovating, improving on energy and efficiency and the use of more environmentally friendly, natural refrigerants, as well as adapting to market changes in application.

What would you say to those looking to start their career in the industry?

The people in this industry are a different breed, having to learn and master the skills of components of other industries. If you enjoy challenges and your goal is to learn, improve and look after your clients’ needs, this industry will benefit you.
