The London Eye, a prominent landmark and tourist attraction, relies on a sophisticated climate control system within its pods. As part of ongoing maintenance and upgrades, the decision was made to replace the existing package chiller units in 10 of the pods which are responsible for cooling and ensuring passenger comfort high above the city.

The replacement of the chiller units presented several key challenges as integrating new chiller units with existing infrastructure required specific mechanical and electrical connections. Collaboration with the site team was crucial to ensure minimal disruption to the London Eye’s day to day operation.

A comprehensive approach was developed by the JSA project team encompassing both mechanical and electrical works:

• Connector Installation: Supplying and installing brazed 22mm to a 1-inch male BSP threaded connectors onto the new package chiller unit pipework.
• On-Site Brazing: Transporting each unit to a suitable outdoor area for safe execution of hot work and brazing.
• Leak Testing: Connection a 1-inch reducing fitting down to a Schrader connector and conducting pressure leak tests to ensure the integrity of new brazes and unit connections.
• Prefabricated Connectors: Supplying and installing 5 pin prefabricated connector leads to each chiller to facilitate wiring connections.

The implementation involved close coordination with the London Eye’s site engineering team and this collaborative approach ensured a seamless integration of the new chillers alongside the existing infrastructure. The project was successfully delivered and all works were progressed efficiently within the allocated timeframes.



The preparation and enabling works for the London Eye’s pod cooling system were executed successfully through a well planned and collaborative approach. This project highlighted the importance of thorough preparation, efficient on-site work and strong communication in delivering critical infrastructure upgrades for complex and high profile installations. The successful completion of these works paved the way for seamless integration and commissioning of the new package chiller units, ultimately contributing to the continued comfort and enjoyment of London Eye visitors.
